Zurich Neuromotor Assessment
The Zurich Neuromotor Assessment (ZNA) is an examination tool that enables a standardized assessment of the neuromotor development of children and adolescents aged 3 to 18 years by testing motor abilities on the one hand and motor skills on the other with adaptive tasks. The performance as well as the quality of movement are recorded. The evaluation is based on age- and gender-specific standard values for each individual test item as well as a component analysis and the calculation of clinically significant indices. The ZNA now includes the 2nd improved and expanded version ZNA-2, the graphomotor test ZGT and the rapid screening for 3-6 years ZNA-Q.
ZNA-2: Innovations in the 2nd version of the Zurich Neuromotor Assessment
Compared to the original version of the Zurich Neuromotor Assessment (Largo et al. 2002, revised 2007), the age range in ZNM-2 was extended from 5 to 18 to 3 to 18 years. The tasks have been standardized across all ages and adapted based on the experience from the first version: adaptive fine and gross motor tasks have been added and two less reliable tasks have been omitted. The Zurich Neuromotor Assessment takes about half an hour to complete. In our two-day introductory course you can learn the examination procedure. If you are already familiar with the 1st version of the Zurich Neuromotor Assessment, we recommend the one-day supplementary course.
If you are interested to visit a course in Switzerland, please pay attention to it that the courses are given in German. For the booking and also the ordering in English please contact us directly on this address: office@fuerdaskind.ch
The results gathered by the ZNA-2 are evaluated using a web-based application (www.znm2019.ch). This ZNA-app provides the exact Z values and a graphic with the associated percentile values for each subtest (of the dominant and non-dominant side) and for the components, so that a neuromotor profile can be displayed. Two total components of the motor function (with and without accociated movements) are also calculated. The software is able to partially replace missing measured values (e.g. due to a lack of cooperation or the child’s inability) with estimated values, so that the ZNA-2 components can also be calculated in these cases. For the test evaluation you need test evaluation credits in the ZNA-app, which can be purchased in the form of packages with 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 tests.

Neuromotor functions of varying complexity in the ZNA-2
The 2nd version of the Zurich Neuromotor Assessment includes various fine and gross motor adaptive tasks, pure motor tasks as well as balance tasks:
- Fine motor: fine motor adaptive tasks
Pegboard | bolts | beads - Pure motor tasks
Repetitive movements of foot, hand, and fingers | alternating movements of foot and hand | sequential finger movements - Balance
Standing on one leg, eyes open and eyes closed - Gross motor: grossmotor adaptive tasks
Jumping sideways | chair rise test | standing long jump
There are two age categories:
- 3 until 5; 11 years
- 6 bis 18 years
Extensive test material in the ZNA-2 case
The new ZNA-2 case contains an examination set with the following materials:

ZNA-Q: a quick and qualitative assessment of gross motor development for 3 to 6 years
With the ZNA-2, a child can be comprehensively and reliably assessed with regard to its neuromotor performance. However, the test takes about 20 minutes to complete. Since there is often not that much time available for an initial assessment, we have developed a quick screening version (ZNA-Q) of the Zurich Neuromotor Assessment with which a reliable assessment of a child’s gross motor skills can be made in just a few minutes using the ZNM-Q.
For further information look at the German site on the ZNM-Q or read the original article in the European Journal of Pediatrics (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30729306/).
